Recently completed Turfgrass Research  in California

Outlook and Summary: Week of December 13, 2004 to December 20, 2004
As with last week, things here have been pretty darn quiet as far as diseases.  Samples of annual bluegrass were sent in from San Diego, Tulare and Riverside counties that showed clear signs of chilling or freezing damage.Yes, we actually do have a winter here in California and night time lows in these areas did dip down below freezing.Annual bluegrass is definitely more susceptible to cold damage than bentgrass.

One of the symptoms that can be observed on chilled greens is just a general yellowing or chlorosis caused by plants just slowing or shutting down.  The distribution is usually patchy and uneven, probably due to the uneven spread and differing cold tolerances of the varied annual bluegrass biotypes present.  The good thing here is that the turf color and vigor will spring back when it warms up.

A more serious problem is frost or hard freezes on greens.  When you have traffic and play on the frosted or frozen turf, it can seriously aggravate the damage as frozen tissue is often tender or brittle.  In these cases, play should be delayed on greens until plants have thawed out.  A decent summary article can be seen here : http://www.usga.org/turf/articles/other/winter_play/playing_par.html

Direct damage due to traffic and mowing on frosted plants can be severe, and you won’t get much recovery if it stays cold.
