Written on March 29th, 2011
The Sierra Nevada Golf Course Superintendents Association (SNGCSA) raises donations from various sources to fund our ongoing scholarship and research program. The S&R program annually funds scholarships to deserving turfgrass and ornamental horticulture students throughout Northern California and the Reno/Carson City, NV areas. Scholarships are awarded annually to assist students whom we feel will stay within the industry and be our leaders of the future. The deadline for applications to be submitted to the SNGCSA office is June 15, 2011.
Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:
- The candidate must be attending an accredited college or university in Northern California or have a permanent residence within Northern California.
- The candidate must be enrolled, or plan to enroll (work in progress notice will be necessary prior to award) in turfgrass, ornamental horticulture, or related degree or certificate program.
- The candidate must demonstrate their financial need.
- The candidate must demonstrate their scholastic ability.
These items will be used by the scholarship and research committee to determine the scholarship recipients. The decision of the committee and board of directors will be final. Scholarships will be awarded at our Annual Scholarship and Research Tournament to be held at The Ridge Golf Course on July 18, 2011.

Roseville golf course dog may be sent packing
Written on January 20th, 2011
There was a recent story about a SNGCSA member in the Sacramento Bee:
It’s the most one-sided love affair in history, by appearance.
The members and staff at Sierra View, a blue-collar private golf club in Roseville, spent eight years spoiling Mooch rotten.
Mooch, her mistrustful behavior indicating serious abuse before she came into their lives, spent eight years acting largely indifferent.
Yet human and canine parties couldn’t be happier together. That’s why the club’s members are torn up that a forced separation appears imminent.

Free Video by PACE Turf Helps Explain Frost Delays to Golfers
Written on December 28th, 2010
Frost delays possibly rank second to aeration in the number of complaints superintendents receive from their golfer clients. But like aeration, the practice of instituting frost delays to protect turf is critically important. A free video from PACE Turf is now available to help explain to golfers how frost damages turf and why a frost delay of just two hours can make a big difference in the ability of turf to survive. Turf scientist Dr. Larry Stowell clearly explains in “Frost Delays: The Cold Hard Facts” that “frozen ice crystals can act like knives on the foliage” of turf. Dr. Stowell also explains that frost can even damage dormant turf.
The video is available free of charge on YouTube and is the latest in a new series of golfer education videos that PACE Turf offers at no charge to the turf management community. The videos offer clear, concise and science-based explanations of topics that affect golfers, such as aeration and the role of hot or cold weather in turf damage.
“Our goal with these videos is to provide superintendents the scientific backup they need to communicate with lay audiences, such as golfers, managers and greens committees,” said Dr. Stowell, director of PACE Turf. “We hear frequent complaints from golfers about frost delays, but we also know from the scientific literature that frost followed by traffic really can inflict serious injury to turf. This video makes the case that the short-term inconvenience caused by frost delays is well worth the trouble in the longer term.”
The PACE Turf video is suitable for viewing at greens committee meetings, in club houses or other areas frequented by golf patrons.
It can be viewed on at this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR7eAloWCpM). The video can also be placed on superintendent association websites or golf course websites by clicking on the “embed” button that appears underneath the video on YouTube. PACE Turf’s other golfer education and superintendent education videos can be viewed on the PACE Turf YouTube Channel or http://www.youtube.com/user/paceturf.
PACE Turf is a membership organization that provides breaking research news, information and expert advice on its website www.paceturf.org. The mission of PACE Turf is to generate and share independent and objective agronomic information for turf professionals, so they may develop management programs that are effective, practical and scientifically sound.
