This position requires a minimum of 3 years of experience working in a lead capacity in a golf course maintenance position. 

Qualified candidates will also possess the following:
Experience successfully managing a diverse workforce
Knowledgeable in irrigation programming
Experience applying and monitoring chemical and fertilizer applications
Skilled at project management, including successful time management strategies
Inventory control
Ability to operate equipment associated with golf course maintenance
Strong leadership skills including the ability to effectively motivate a team
Self directed with strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Spanish speaking is a plus

Education:
Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school is required
Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school is preferred

The golf course was redesigned by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1929. The club is working to return to Dr. MacKenzie’s original design under the guidance of Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf Inc. The club employs a crew of 15 unionized personnel of which many have been long time employees and five seasonal staff. The club is 111 years old in the Rockridge area of Oakland.

Position Type   Non-exempt Full Time

Job Summary  The Second Assistant is responsible for the daily maintenance, care and management of the golf course.  The Second Assistant is responsible for chemical and fertilizer applications and irrigation maintenance.  The Second Assistant is designed to be an entry-level position with a major focus on maintenance and a minor focus on management.  It is designed to be a transitional position to provide guidance for the individual’s growth and promotion in the golf course management industry.
 Qualifications
- Associate degree or extensive experience in turf management or a related field.
- Knowledge of the Toro irrigation systems and irrigation pump mechanics.
- Knowledge of the proper use of various chemicals, fertilizers, soil conditioners, etc.
- Ability to read and understand general business publications, professional publications, technical reports, and government regulations.
- Spanish speaking skills preferred.
- Ability to obtain a CA state pesticide applicators license.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Minimal computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
 

Worked Performed 

1. The Second Assistant’s basic duties will include, but not limited to: course set up, water management, operation of all mowing and motorized equipment, bunker maintenance, overseeding.  These tasks are the bulk of the individual’s daily responsibilities.
2. The Second Assistant is directly involved with the application of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, or other chemical applications on the golf course.
3. The Second Assistant is directly involved with the application of fertilizers on the golf course.
4. The Second Assistant is responsible for irrigation maintenance and repairs.
5. The Second Assistant assists in the implementation and supervision of daily water requirements of the golf course including overnight irrigation, daily watering, and hand watering.
6. The Second Assistant assists in the preparation of daily, weekly and monthly projects and maintenance task lists that outline routine maintenance work such as cutting of greens, tees, roughs and fairways.
7. The Second Assistant shows a strong interest in self-improvement by joining professional organizations as well as participating in continuing education or training opportunities such as seminars, workshops and trade shows in order to maintain knowledge of the profession. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Some supervisory responsibilities will be granted based on the individual and their length of tenure.
 

Work Environment for a 40 hour work week:
-         Physical demands are required for this position including heavy lifting and manual labor
-         Ability to operate golf carts, mowers, and some heavy equipment.
-         While performing this job the employee is exposed to outside weather conditions including: sun exposure and rain.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 31 hours of repetitive movement - standing, walking, twisting, turning, bending squatting, stooping, talking, writing, and typing.
