Turf disease weekly report
***New Feature***
Weather Updates and Diseases at Risk

University of California Turf Disease Diagnostic Lab services, a weekly report  is being sent out to update clients of current disease outbreaks in California and nearby locations with a focus on diseases of golf course turf.
Outlook and Summary: July 15, 2008

If you didn’t notice already – the summer is here! Last week brought a number of summer patch diagnoses from annual bluegrass greens and some heat and drought stressed samples. With high temperatures in the valleys and deserts, keep on your anthracnose/summer patch programs and for those on the coast, hot valleys often means fog and moisture being pulled from the coast inland, resulting in longer periods of leaf wetness --- watch out for foliar diseases like dollar spot, gray leaf spot and some of the Rhizoctonias.

It’s Pyth-a-riffic!

We picked up Pythium from a few locations with week in California with a few phone calls also coming in reporting the disease. If night time temperatures in the summer are above 68ºF – you are at risk for Pythium hitting you on cool season turf. Areas that are over irrigated or have standing water (such as drainage or low areas) are especially at risk.

Make a preventive Pythium application when you know you are in the red zone for the disease since Pythium can cause severe turf loss in 24hrs so its important to watch out for it.

Diagnosed Disease Activity
*Diseases and hosts are listed by county of origin followed by number of samples positive for the disease.  Counties without diagnosed disease activity have been omitted.
