Turf disease weekly report
If you didn’t notice already – the summer is here! Last week brought a number of summer patch diagnoses from annual bluegrass greens and some heat and drought stressed samples. With high temperatures in the valleys and deserts, keep on your anthracnose/summer patch programs and for those on the coast, hot valleys often means fog and moisture being pulled from the coast inland, resulting in longer periods of leaf wetness --- watch out for foliar diseases like dollar spot, gray leaf spot and some of the Rhizoctonias. It’s Pyth-a-riffic! We picked up Pythium from a few locations with week in California with a few phone calls also coming in reporting the disease. If night time temperatures in the summer are above 68ºF – you are at risk for Pythium hitting you on cool season turf. Areas that are over irrigated or have standing water (such as drainage or low areas) are especially at risk. Make a preventive Pythium application when you know you are in the red zone for the disease since Pythium can cause severe turf loss in 24hrs so its important to watch out for it. Dr. Frank P. Wong
