Barona Creek G C Watch The Golf Channel from Thursday, Nov. 1 through Nov. 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are hosting The Nationwide Tour Championship. If you played Barona during the GCSAA Tournament when the Conference was in San Diego, you will see a different golf course. Roughs are much wider and pretty deep. We came very near to having it cancelled due to concerns about smoke. Other than losing 800 labor hours a week before the event, we are ready to go. Hope everyone has a chance to watch a few minutes and check out the quality of play. Watching the practice rounds, I can tell you, these kids are really good! Sandy Clark, CGCS
Thirty-five financial planners flew in from all over the country to spend five days at UC Irvine's FPA Residency Program in Lake Arrowhead. The day the students arrived, the hot Santa Ana winds blew sparking off catastrophic wildfires throughout Southern California, including the San Bernardino Mountains where Lake Arrowhead is located. The students found themselves being evacuated from the mountains on the first day of class. UCR Extension opened its doors to the financial planning refugees. Tiffany Berry, of Conferencing Services, and Eric Blum, director of Business, Engineering and Technology, arranged for their lodging and ensured their all-day programs went off without a hitch. "Tiffany and Eric were stellar," said Francine Berg, certified financial program representative at UC Irvine. "The students we're so happy the program didn't cancel." And the students got a quintessential California experience: Go west, get evacuated and watch wildfires from afar.

Jim Husting, CGCS California GCSA Government Relations Chairman jchust@sbcglobal.net On Oct. 16, the U.S. Senate approved a one-year extension of the H-2B Visa "returning workers" exemption by including it in the Senate Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill. This action has brought golf facilities one step closer to access to an expanded pool of seasonal labor. The measure now moves to a Conference Committee where Senate and House members will decide whether to include the extension in the final appropriations bill. GCSAA and its members will redouble efforts to push for the extension of the one-year cap exemption as soon as the Conference Committee has been named. Learn more

"GCSAA News" "Fund is to provide financial assistance to GCSAA members" This communication is being sent to the leadership of the San Diego GCSA, the GCSA of Southern California, the Hi Lo GCSA, as well as the California GCSA and the GCSA of Northern California. According to CNN, over 320,000 homes have been evacuated!! Our prayers are with everyone located throughout Southern California, as they deal with the aftermath of these severe wildfires. We are especially concerned about the safety and well-being of our 'shared' GCSAA members and their families and we hope and pray that everyone is safe. Knowing the devastation that can result due to wildfires, we are asking you to assist us in making known the availability of GCSAA’s Emergency Relief Fund to our 'shared' members. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to GCSAA members who suffer personal loss or medical hardship. * Any GCSAA member is eligible for this assistance.
Initially, GCSAA will provide $1,000 financial assistance (intended to assist with clothing, food and shelter) to members who contact us (via phone or email) and whose daily lives are altered by the affects of the wildfires and who meet ANY of the following criteria: * Have had to relocate (whether they are staying
with family, friends or in a motel) from their homes.
Note: These members will not be required to provide us with any documentation or invoices other than a verbal or email request for assistance and verification on our end that they are within the affected area. Our goal is to provide financial assistance as quickly as possible. Once our members have had an opportunity to truly assess their long-term situation, in terms of personal loss and employment status, we will make available the additional $1,500 following more closely the aforementioned criteria. Please know that GCSAA is here to help our members anyway we can. If you have questions about the fund or the application process, please contact me at 800/472-7878, ext. 4418 swoodhead@gcsaa.org. R. Robert DiPietro, Superintendent Somersett Country Club Robert came to Somersett Country Clubin 2002 during the construction and grow-in for the course. Robert was no stranger to the grow-in process with the construction and grow-in of Arrow Creek C.C. and Castle Oaks C.C. already under his belt. With this experience he was more than up for the job. Robert was raised in Portland, Oregon, with his father and brother owning landscaping companies, it was no surprise that he developed a love for the outdoors and developed his skills to make things grow. Robert moved to Palm Desert in the mid eighties when the golf boom was hitting the Palm Springs area. He received his Associate of Science degree in Turfgrass Management at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert and started his career as a greenskeeper at the Palm Valley C.C. in Palm Desert in 1986. He was then hired at the Newport Beach C.C. in Newport Beach as the Assistant Superintendent in 1988. With his keen abilities he was then hired by Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach as the Assistant Superintendent in 1989. In 1991 he was challenged with the Superintendent, Construction, Grow-in at Castle Oaks Golf Club in lone. He worked there until 1993 at which time he moved to Chico to take the superintendent position at Canyon Oaks C.C. Within four years another opportunity came up for a Superintendent, Construction, Grow-in at Arrow Creek C.C. in Reno, so in 1997 Robert moved his family to Reno. Then in 2002, Somersett C.C. was ready to begin its construction and Robert was the man for the job. His talents of taking a piece of earth in the high desert with nothing but sage brush, tumble-weeds, and rock and creating a golf course are evident at Somersett. Somersett C.C. is an 18 hole par 72 , KBR designed course. KBR is the team of World Golf Hall of Fame, U.S. Open Champion, and Ryder Team Captain Tom Kite and his fellow designers Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell. The private club serves as the center to the community. At 7,252 yards, with seven lakes, and 62 white sand bunkers, this beautiful setting with dramatic elevation changes and scenic views will challenge even the best golfers. The #14 hole with a downhill dogleg left, par 5, and two lakes on both sides gave our players some additional excitement. Robert is challenged daily by the arid climate and wind. Future projects at the course include the construction of the clubhouse. Robert loves being outdoors, working daily with a living organism. He plays bogey golf at an 18.1 handicap. He loves playing other courses as well as skiing and traveling with his wife Tami, daughter Dominique, age 11, and son Dawsen, age 8. With all of Robert success's he says they would not be possible without his entire crew, including his assistant Jesus Mendez, Alonso Navarro, and his equipment manager Morgan McCauley. Irrigation
Innovations Coming to San Diego
FALLS CHURCH, Va. (Oct. 18, 2007) — Irrigation innovations will be featured at the 2007 International Irrigation Show in San Diego from the technical conference and solution center to the new product contest and industry awards. The show runs Dec. 9-11 with classes and certification exams offered Dec. 6-11 at the San Diego Convention Center. “Innovations in Irrigation” is the new name for the IA technical conference, which now includes a business track along with sessions specifically for landscape and agricultural irrigation. Nearly 90 conference sessions over three days will include topics like “lean management” for the irrigation industry, selling smart irrigation, urban rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation, and technologies for longer pump life. Urban rainwater harvesting will be featured in the IA Solution Center on the exposition floor. The center will include working irrigation and rainwater collection systems with a live demonstration of how to connect the irrigation to a cistern. “A common theme of the show and technical conference is how the irrigation industry can thrive when competition for water is fierce,” said Irrigation Association Executive Director Deborah Hamlin. “Irrigation efficiency has become our mantra. The show will demonstrate innovations in efficiency and provide opportunities to continue to share our efficiency message with policy makers and customers.” A new IA certification that focuses on improving efficiency for the end user is being offered for the first time in San Diego. The Certified Water Conservation Manager-Landscape will appeal to consultants, system operators and contractors. Applicants must be a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor or Golf Course Irrigation Auditor in good standing and have three years industry experience. Registration for exams offered at the show is required by Nov. 16. The show is the only time the full slate of Irrigation Association courses is offered at one time in one location. More than 40 classes are scheduled Dec. 6-11. “Education and certification are vital to the future of the industry,” Hamlin said. “Technology is only as good as the design, installation and management, which can’t be done without a well-trained workforce.” Ed Begley Jr. is the keynote speaker at the IA general session on Monday, Dec. 10. Begley, who was nominated for six Emmy Awards for his role in “St. Elsewhere,” has an entertaining but important environmental message. The IA Partner of the Year Award, two Industry Achievement Awards and other honors will be presented during the session. Additional entertainment and networking opportunities will be found aboard the USS Midway, the venue for two receptions, a general reception, which follows a special contractor reception presented by the IA Contractor Common Interest Group. The Midway is a retired aircraft carrier that’s been converted to a museum. The new Government Affairs Roundtable will address state and national issues that affect the entire industry. The roundtable is a forum to bring the industry together on issues and to spread the word that irrigation is part of the solution. Water conservation measures should include efficient irrigation not no irrigation. A special Growers Forum, co-hosted with the California Agricultural Irrigation Association, will include a panel discussion of food safety. California Agriculture Secretary A.G. Kawamura has accepted an invitation to sit on the panel. Learn more and register at www.irrigation.org. The mission of the Irrigation Association is to promote
efficient irrigation.
2007 INTELLIGENT USE OF WATER FILM COMPETITION Carpa Diem and A Drop of Life Take Home Top Prizes AZUSA, CA (October 17, 2007)-- Rain Bird, the leading manufacturer and provider of irrigation products and services, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 Intelligent Use of WaterTM Film Competition (www.iuowfilm.com). The environmentally-focused film competition gives both amateur and experienced filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their talents and encourage greater awareness of the need for intelligent water use. Following a special screening of the six finalists' films at The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Rain Bird presented filmmakers Sergio Cannella and Shalini Kantayya with the Judges Award and the Audience Choice Award respectively for their film entries Carpa Diem and A Drop of Life. "All six finalists in the competition presented outstanding films that will undoubtedly encourage discussion on ways to manage and efficiently utilize Earth's most precious resource," said Dave Johnson, Rain Bird's corporate marketing director. "Because scarcity and mismanagement of water has a tremendous impact on the whole world, providing forums such as The Intelligent Use of Water Film Competition enables filmmakers like Sergio and Shalini to exercise their influence and spotlight these important issues. The solution to the world's water problems requires the education, mobilization and involvement of everyone, and each of our finalists' films inspires action." As the winner of the Judges Award, Sergio Cannella of Palermo, Italy received $6,000 for his film, Carpa Diem. The film depicts a child lovingly watching a carp swimming in an aquarium as her younger brother's careless use of water in the neighboring bathroom slowly drains the fish tank. Shalini Kantayya, the Audience Choice winner, received $3,000 for her film entry titled A Drop of Life. The story of two women--one Indian and one American--A Drop of Life demonstrates a shared struggle to save the world's drinking water in the not-so-distant future. The environmental and film industry experts serving as judges included: Gary McVey, Executive Director, American Cinema Foundation; Lane Kneedler, Programming Coordinator, American Film Institute; Amanda Pope, Associate Professor, University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts; Frances Spivy-Weber, member of the California State Water Resources Control Board; and Robert Glennon, Professor, University of Arizona's Rogers College of Law and author of Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America's Fresh Waters. Rain Bird's Intelligent Use of Water Film Competition is the most recent example of the company's history of creating programs and initiatives to boost water conservation awareness. Rain Bird devotes significant resources to its Intelligent Use of Water public initiatives, which include a series of white papers, public service announcements, membership on the EPA's Alliance for Water Efficiency and the EPA's WaterSense steering committee, bi-annual Intelligent Use of Water Summits, partnerships with non-profit organizations, development and support of elementary and middle school curriculums and participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade®.
